Our Ultimate Isopod Habitat Kit includes everything you need to your own isopod colony, and then some! This kit includes a 6 quart vented storage box, 1 lb. of our custom blended isopod soil, sphagnum moss, leaf litter, a piece of cork bark, a piece of cholla wood, isopod food, bee pollen, mosquito bits, charcoal, a spray bottle, food dish, and assembly instructions which explain how to properly get things set up. This is the ultimate habitat kit for isopods because it goes above and beyond to include everything needed to maintain a healthy and productive colony. This habitat kit can support approximately 250+ isopods.
If you are placing isopods in a bioactive terrarium with reptiles we recommend keeping a separate colony at all times. This way you can always add more to your terrarium if your reptiles eat them all.
6 Quart Vented Storage Box:
This storage box is semi-transparent and has a long rectangular proportion. The semi-transparent plastic is perfect for isopods because it allows in just the right amount of light while limiting visibility to their outside environment. Isopods prefer not to be seen, so something like clear glass is less than ideal. The long rectangular shape allows for a moisture gradient to be achieved. We recommend keeping the back end damp and allowing the front to remain mostly dry. We also added a vent at each end for proper airflow, which is important in helping prevent toxic fumes from building up inside the habitat.
1 lb. Exo-Morphs Custom Blended Isopod Soil:
Our custom blended soil is composed of a variety of organic ingredients that help isopods thrive. It consists of organic leaf compost, earthworm castings, biochar, marine soil, charcoal, natural soil enhancers, and more to create a nutrient-rich soil that holds moisture and helps create a chemically and nutritionally balanced environment for your isopods to thrive. Aside from a balanced diet, we believe the health of the soil is one of the most important part of raising healthy isopods, especially considering the isopods will consume the soil too. We include enough soil to evenly cover the bottom of the habitat with a thick layer to hold moisture and provide a healthy environment for your isopods.
0.3 oz. Sphagnum Moss:
Sphagnum moss is an excellent natural addition to isopod enclosures. We like to place the sphagnum moss at the back end of the habitat to help retain moisture and raise humidity levels. It is critical that isopod habitats do not completely dry out, and sphagnum moss does a great job at making sure the habitat remains damp. It also serves as a tasty treat for your isopods.
0.3 oz. Leaf Litter:
Leaf litter is an essential part of every isopod habitat. Isopods love to eat leaves, and leaves serve as a great place to hide. As the leaves are consumed, they are broken down and will eventually become a part of the soil. We include a mixture of various types of organic leaves such as maple, oak, birch, and more.
Cork Bark:
Cork bark is widely used in reptile & insect enclosures because it's a natural decoration with many practical uses. It is a nice place for isopods to hide because it contains many crevices and they will cling to the underside as well. Cork bark will be consumed by many of the wood loving species such as Powder Oranges and Powder Whites. Cork bark does not get moldy which is especially useful in damp environments like isopod habitats.
6" Cholla Wood
Much like cork bark, cholla wood is a great natural decoration for insect habitats. It's loaded with cracks and crevices for isopods to hide in, plus it looks cool too!
0.3 oz. Charcoal:
Charcoal is a superior bioactive soil enhancer. It increases soil nutrition, aerates the soil, and removes soil toxins such as nitrogen and sulfur which can be fatal to isopods especially in an enclosed habitat.
1.2 oz. Bee Pollen:
Bee pollen is an incredible nutritional supplement that is often regarded as "Mother Nature's Superfood". It's jam-packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients and is an excellent addition to the isopod daily diet.
1 oz. Dubia Powder:
Isopods thrive when fed a diverse range of organic matter. We create our own dried dubia roach powder and have been feeding this to our reptiles and isopods for many years and have been seeing phenomenal results. Dubia powder is loaded with protein, nutrients including calcium which is a essential part of the isopod diet.
1 oz. Dried Vegetables:
This habitat kit includes a 1 oz. bag of dried vegetables to help provide a diverse and balanced daily diet for your isopods. Vegetables are loaded with essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients isopods need to thrive. Nothing can replace fresh fruits and vegetables as a primary food source, but our dried vegetables help bridge the gap between fresh feedings and also serve as a clutch food source when you need to have extended periods of time between feedings.
0.75 oz. Mosquito Bits
Mosquito bits are used for natural fungus gnat control. They're a biological larvicide that destroys fungus gnat eggs as well as mosquito larvae while remaining completely safe and harmless to your isopods. Fungus gnats are an invasive pest that will often colonize bioactive enclosure such as isopod habitats and Mosquito Bits are very useful in keeping them at bay.
Spray Bottle:
It is important to mist your isopod habitat regularly. We recommend misting daily to help maintain desired humidity levels.
Food Dish:
We include a food dish to help hold some of the food ingredients contained in this kit. You can either rotate the foods offered at each feeding, or you can even blend them together to offer a mixture. The food dish should be emptied and cleaned often to prevent the buildup of mold since the habitat needs to remain damp.
